About Underwater Hockey
Underwater Hockey, also known as Octopush, is a fast-paced team sport played underwater in swimming pools. Two teams of six players each compete to maneuver a puck along the bottom of the pool into the opposing team's goal.
The sport demands exceptional fitness, breath-holding ability, tactical awareness, and teamwork. Players must constantly surface for air while maintaining continuous play, making it one of the most physically demanding team sports.
Game Rules & Format
Team Composition
• 6 players per team in the water (3 forwards, 2 backs, 1 goalkeeper equivalent)
• Up to 8 substitutes on the team roster
• Players can substitute freely during play
Game Duration
• Two halves of 15 minutes each (senior level)
• 3-minute half-time break
• Continuous play with game clock stopped only for serious injuries
Objective
• Score goals by getting the puck into the opponent's goal
• Goals are 3 meters wide and positioned on the pool bottom
• The puck must be pushed or flicked, not carried
Equipment
Essential equipment for underwater hockey includes:
• Mask and snorkel for clear vision and breathing at surface
• Fins for propulsion and maneuvering underwater
• Pusher (stick) - short stick used to move the puck
• Protective gloves to prevent injury during play
• Water polo cap with ear guards for protection
• Puck - heavy puck that sinks to pool bottom

Getting Started
Underwater hockey is an inclusive sport suitable for all fitness levels and ages. Most clubs offer beginner sessions where new players can learn basic skills, rules, and safety procedures.
